Setting:

The polo club is set in a most bucolic milieu right in the middle of beautiful Basking Ridge in northern NJ. A stream runs along the perimeter of the property and a pond along with a half-mile exercise track for horses further lend to the picturesqueness.

Location:

Being a mere 30 minute beeline from Holland Tunnel, Shannon Hill Polo Club is the nearest and most conveniently located polo club for residents of midtown and downtown Manhattan, adjoining sections of Brooklyn, Staten Island and multiple northern NJ counties.

Shannon Hill Polo Club is also the only polo club in northern NJ with not only a beautiful full size grass field but also full size polo arenas affording continuity of games and practices despite inclement weather.

Charity Events:

There is a long tradition of philanthropy in polo; Shannon Hill Cup is played every fall at Shannon Hill Polo Club to raise funds for Cardiac Education and Research Foundation which provides for continuing medical education in the form of nurse scholarships to further the cause of cardiac care at area Heart Hospitals. All members are invited to attend and have the opportunity to participate in the game as well.

Polo games are played only in the outdoor arena mid-April to mid-May and weather permitting mid-October till Thanksgiving weekend.

Arena polo is especially suited for beginner players as it is more contained and hence safer.

Polo Lessons:

On-site polo professional Dani Wasty gives polo lessons to beginners on quiet horses in the indoor and the outdoor arenas; lessons are moved to the open grass field as the players make steady progress and it is deemed safe for them to be on the field.

A typical beginner lesson has four parts:

Part 1: is didactics on the ground covering the basics of horsemanship.

Part 2: is the actual riding of the horse without a mallet.

Part 3: is mallet work on the horse.

Part 4: is cool down and discussion.

The whole lesson lasts one hour and costs $100. Mallets are provided for the first few lessons.

Cynthia Delbosco (seen above) frequently assists the club pro Dani in giving the basic polo riding lessons.

Beginner Games:

Beginner players are quickly graduated on to outdoor arena games ; an arena game is typically four chukkers and is played with three players on each side. Beginner players are advanced to open field games once it is felt they will be safe playing open field polo.
